Monitoring respiratory symptoms in the UK through FluSurvey

Discussing FluSurvey since its re-launch in 2023, looking at how its data informs respiratory viruse research including an example from COVID-19.

A range of data sources are required to monitor respiratory virus activity and its associated impacts on the population. FluSurvey is a citizen science project where members of the public voluntarily submit weekly symptoms surveys through an online web tool, allowing insights into early trends and broader burden in the community. It was originally set up by LSHTM in 2009 during the H1N1 "swine flu" pandemic and forms part of a network of similar surveys across Europe ("InfluenzaNet"), facilitating harmonised approaches in monitoring respiratory illnesses.

This talk will introduce FluSurvey since its relaunch on a new web platform in 2023, and how these data are used to inform our understanding of respiratory viruses in near real-time during winter. It will additionally present key findings from a recent analysis characterising symptom reporting and health behaviours following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as comparisons to other national surveillance data sources.
