The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers

HR Excellence in Research logo

The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers revised in 2019 was produced by Research Councils UK and Universities UK and is an agreement between funders and employers of research staff to improve the employment and support for researchers and research careers in UK higher education.

It sets out three clear Principles of:

  • environment and culture,
  • employment,
  • professional and career development.

The principles are underpinned by obligations for the four key stakeholder groups, funders, institutions, researchers and managers of researchers, to realise the aims of the Concordat.

As a signatory, LSHTM fully supports the Principles of this Concordat and we intend to uphold our obligations and responsibilities as a signatory. Read the letter of commitment to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

Implementation of the Concordat at LSHTM

LSHTM is committed to embedding the principles of the Concordat into its policies and processes. We have conducted a gap analysis of current policies and practices against the Concordat principles. This has shown areas of action for improving LSHTM research staff development. A UK-wide process, incorporating the QAA UK Quality Code for Higher Education, Chapter B11: Research Degrees and the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, enables institutions to gain the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award, acknowledging alignment with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment.
