Bacterial glycosylation, what have we learned and what could the future hold?

Glycosylation was once thought to be a rare occurrence in bacteria. However, improvements in sequencing technologies and mass spectrometry methods, have revealed a plethora of protein modification systems. Their presence raises significant questions about potential biological roles and biotechnological exploitation. We still have much to learn, but perhaps some answers are closer to home than we think...
