From ethical principles to practice: engaging refugee youth in gender-based violence research

16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

LSHTM Event

Building on the ethical considerations in violence research discussed in the preceding panel, this session poses the question: “What additional benefits and challenges arise when involving youth in high-risk situations in research on sensitive topics, such as child marriage as a form of gender-based violence?”

The session will begin with a case study demonstrating how ethical principles were applied in the design and implementation of a participatory research project with Rohingya refugee youths in Malaysia. Key components include the establishment of a Rohingya Youth Research Advisory Group and the co-creation of emancipatory workshops that integrated capacity-building with research consultation. It will also highlight the importance of centring youth perspectives, particularly how these have generated counter-narratives to child marriage with implications for intervention design.

In the second half, attendees will engage in a discussion on the value, opportunities, and challenges of involving youth in gender-based violence research. The conversation will also examine when such involvement is appropriate and how to ensure it is conducted safely and meaningfully, maximising benefits for all involved.
