We are sharing news of a memorial for the sad passing of Dr Susan Abarca Salazar.

Susan was a Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases from Peru. She first joined LSHTM in 2019 to study the MSc Immunology of Infectious Diseases, and then became a doctoral candidate on the LSHTM and Nagasaki University (NU) Joint PhD Programme for Global Health in 2021, researching new diagnostics for children with tuberculous meningitis in collaboration with the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL and international partners. Susan was a deeply valued friend and colleague and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege to know her.

A memorial for Susan will be held on Tuesday 12 September 2023, 12:15–13:00 (6:15–7:00 GMT-5) in the Manson Lecture Theatre (LSHTM, Keppel Street, London, WC1E 7HT) and will include a minute of silence.  

For those who cannot attend in person, the memorial will be livestreamed with Spanish translation. Participants can use the interpretation function on the menu bar to switch their audio channel for real-time translation. There will also be live captions in English and Spanish available during the service.

Tea and coffee and a quiet room will be available after the memorial. 
 
Later that day, Newman House Catholic Chapel (111 Gower Street, London WC1E 6AR) will celebrate Mass for Susan at 17:30 (BST).  All are welcome to meet in Keppel Street reception at 17:00 for those who would like to walk there in a group. Please look for Ian Carter, Head of Student Support Services. Receptionists will direct those to the chapel who did not walk from LSHTM. 

A JustGiving fundraiser has been set up by Susan’s friends and colleagues to make personal donations to send to her family in Peru. 
 
A physical memorial book will be given to the family in Peru for the funeral. If you would like to send any messages or photos, please send this to Eneko Unda-Berra as soon as possible so they can be translated and printed.

 

Es con profunda tristeza que debemos informarles que la Dra. Susan Abarca Salazar ha fallecido inesperadamente.

Susan fue Consultora en Enfermedades Infecciosas Pediátricas de Perú. Se unió por primera vez a LSHTM en 2019 para estudiar el MSc en Inmunología de Enfermedades Infecciosas y luego se convirtió en candidata doctoral en el Programa de Doctorado Conjunto para la Salud Global de LSHTM y la Universidad de Nagasaki (NU) en 2021, investigando nuevos diagnósticos para niños con meningitis tuberculosa en colaboración con la Unidad de Ensayos Clínicos del MRC en UCL y socios internacionales. Susan fue una amiga y compañera muy estimada y será profundamente extrañada por todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla. Nuestras sinceras condolencias van para su familia y amigos.

Se llevará a cabo un homenaje a Susan el martes 12 de septiembre de 2023, de 12:15 a 13:00 (6:15 a 7:00 GMT-5) en el Manson Theatre (LSHTM, Keppel Street, Londres, WC1E 7HT) e incluirá un minuto de silencio.

Para aquellos que no puedan asistir en persona, el homenaje se transmitirá en vivo con traducción al español. Después del servicio conmemorativo, habrá té, café y una sala de reflexión disponibles.

Más tarde en el día, la Capilla Católica de Newman House (111 Gower Street, Londres WC1E 6AR) celebrará una misa en memoria de Susan a las 17:30 (BST). Todos son bienvenidos a reunirse en la recepción de Keppel Street a las 17:00 para aquellos que deseen caminar en grupo. Por favor, busquen a Ian Carter, Jefe de Servicios de Apoyo Estudiantil. Los recepcionistas guiarán a aquellos que no hayan caminado desde LSHTM hasta la capilla.

Un grupo de amigos y compañeros de Susan ha establecido una recaudación de fondos en JustGiving para hacer donaciones personales que se enviarán a su familia en Perú.

Un libro conmemorativo físico se entregará a la familia en Perú para el funeral. Si desean enviar mensajes o fotos, por favor envíenlos lo antes posible a Eneko Unda-Berra para que puedan ser traducidos e impresos.
