Can you please tell us a bit about your current work/research?
My work is driven by a deep commitment to ensuring that 'no woman should die while bringing life into the world,' and I am proud to be part of a movement that is making a tangible difference in the lives of women and newborns. Today, as I work to expand m-mama, across Africa, I am constantly reminded of the invaluable knowledge and skills I gained at LSHTM.
What motivated you to study MSc Public Health?
My motivation to pursue an MSc in Public Health stemmed directly from my experiences on the ground. Initially, I worked with human rights organizations and then transitioned into health-related programs. This included coordinating the Mobile Street Children Arts Against AIDS project and contributing to the AMREF Health Africa microbicide gel trials, which were linked to LSHTM. These experiences, especially my early involvement with m-mama, made it clear that a deeper understanding of public health principles was essential. The MSc provided theoretical and analytical tools to complement my practical experience, enabling me to effectively address the complex health challenges faced by vulnerable populations. The knowledge gained continues to be invaluable in my current role, where evidence-based strategies are crucial for success.
Tell us a bit about your career so far?
As the m-mama Regional Director of External Affairs and Country Engagements, I play a pivotal role in driving the strategic vision and operational success of this life-saving emergency transport system across multiple African nations. My responsibilities encompass guiding country directors, fostering a strong organisational culture, and ensuring government ownership of the m-mama system. I support country Directors in providing strategic support on political, governmental, and operational matters. My work requires a deep understanding of the political landscape and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships to achieve sustainable impact.
How have your studies impacted your career?
The MSc in Public Health from LSHTM has had a profound impact on my career. The knowledge and skills I gained have been directly applicable to my work with m-mama, enabling me to approach public health challenges with a more nuanced and evidence-based perspective. The course taught me to think critically, analyse data effectively, and develop strategic interventions tailored to the specific needs of the communities we serve. This foundation has been instrumental in my ability to lead and mentor country directors, navigate complex political environments, and together with the team, drive the expansion of m-mama across the region. I am putting the knowledge I got at LSHTM into practice every day.
What were your favourite memories from your studies with us?
My time at LSHTM was transformative. Coming from a non-English speaking background, I initially faced challenges with the accent and teaching style. However, I found the library to be an invaluable resource, allowing me to supplement lectures and deepen my understanding. Beyond academics, I cherished the friendships formed with fellow students, both in London and through distance learning. The course instilled a strong sense of responsibility and independence, which has been crucial in my current role, where I often work autonomously. The support from LSHTM staff in Tanzania, who generously dedicated their time to assist with statistics and Stata, also stands out as a testament to the school's commitment to student success.
Why do you think it is beneficial to study at LSTHM/ in London for your course?
LSHTM's reputation for high-quality education and its exceptional faculty made it the ideal choice for my MSc. The school's rigorous academic environment, coupled with its global perspective, provided a unique learning experience that I doubt could be replicated elsewhere. The exposure to diverse research methodologies and the opportunity to engage with leading experts in the field were invaluable. I believe that LSHTM not only equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills, but also fosters a critical thinking approach that is essential for addressing complex public health challenges. I genuinely cannot imagine a better institution for this course.
What would your advice be to prospective students considering the programme?
I wholeheartedly recommend the MSc in Public Health at LSHTM. If the program was transformative for me over 12 years ago, I can only imagine the enhanced opportunities and resources available to students today. The school's commitment to excellence and its global reach makes it an unparalleled learning environment. My advice would be to embrace the challenge, engage fully with the faculty and fellow students, and leverage the vast resources available. This experience will not only enrich your academic knowledge but also shape your perspective as a public health professional.
