I am a cardiologist and epidemiologist based at the MRC Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where I lead the nutrition-related chronic diseases (NRCD) research programme within the Nutrition and Planetary Health Theme.

I completed my MSc and PhD at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. I obtained an MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree from the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of The Gambia and a Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées (DES) de Cardiologie (Postgraduate Specialist Diploma in Cardiology) at Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal. Teaching

I teach and examine MSc taught modules and final exams on the MSc Nutrition for Global Health course.

Research

My research focuses on the epidemiology and mechanisms of nutrition-related chronic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. I aims to better understand and manage these disease processes through patient-oriented and translational research. I currently leads on several research projects in The Gambia through which I seek to describe modifiable barriers to diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, investigate its aetiological drivers and mechanisms, validate novel artificial intelligence-enabled ECG to screen for cardiac contractile dysfunction in low resource settings, and determining the optimal diagnostic and risk stratification approaches for people with hypertension in rural SSA.
