Dr. Norman’s research program seeks to develop evidence to support improvements to family planning access, quality of care, and health policy. This research involves innovation end-users (health professionals, health system leaders, and an advisory board of citizens) in problem identification, prioritization, and research design leading to facilitated uptake of solutions. Norman’s program utilizes content expertise, collaborations, and trust established over decades as a respected and effective physician leader in the field of family planning.

Dr. Wendy Norman is a family physician-researcher in Canada and holds the national Chair in Family Planning Public Health Research from the Public Health Agency of Canada. She is a Professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia, an associate member in the School of Population and Public Health, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Among many awards Norman was recognized by the Canadian Government in 2022 as "A Woman of Impact" in the STEM category, and by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada in 2021 as the inaugural recipient of the "National Mentorship Award". In 2015, Dr. Norman received the Darroch Award from the Guttmacher Institute for her work that combines excellence in research with practical application to public policy and programs in the field of sexual and reproductive health. She and her team are based in the Women’s Health Research Institute of BC Women’s Hospital, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and she leads the national collaboration Canadian The Contraception & Abortion Research Team – Groupe de recherche sur l’avortement et la contraception (CARTGRAC www.cart-grac.ubc.ca).

Norman has completed a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Strategic Research Training Fellowship in Primary Healthcare Research, the UBC Department of Family Practice Clinician Scholars Program and a Masters of Health Science, and is currently undertaking a PhD at LSHTM under the supervision of Dr. Kaye Wellings.

Teaching

Teaching in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada) since 1999, primarily as a clinical preceptor until 2000. Teaching in graduate level epidemiology courses and a range of undergraduate courses since 2000. Academic faculty and director of the Clinician Scholar Program (a graduate course in research methodologies) and Director of researcher training in the Department of Family Practice, UBC 2013- 2023. Dr. Norman's lecture on the epidemiology of unintended pregnancy is consistently one of the most highly rated lectures within the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

She contributed to teaching at LSHTM as an Honorary Associate Professor from 2018 to 2023.
