Autism: epidemic or not?
Professor Klag is visiting Heath-Clark lecturer at the School, having recently stepped down after 13 years as the Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His background is in noncommunicable disease epidemiology, especially kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, as well as in internal medicine.
Post his Deanship, Michael is focusing his research on autism spectrum disorder. In the US the prevalence of the condition in boys is nearly 3%, in the UK around 2%, and the condition has substantial public health and personal impact. The incidence has increased substantially over the last several decades, but it is unclear whether this is a real increase or a reporting bias.
