Introducing the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST): How we are supporting the COVID-19 response

Join us for this virtual conversation where Professor Daniel Bausch (Director of the UK-PHRST) will introduce the UK-PHRST and discuss how they have been responding to the COVID-19 pandemic both remotely and on the ground.

We will hear from Hilary Bower (Assistant Professor in Epidemiology, UK-PHRST) and Hana Rohan (Assistant Professor in Social Sciences, UK-PHRST) on how they have been providing remote support to the Africa CDC in response to COVID-19, and Dr Yewande Alimi (co-chair of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Section for COVID-19 response, Africa CDC) who has been working closely with the UK-PHRST. Additionally, Jonathan Ashcroft (Microbiologist, UK-PHRST) will discuss his recent deployment to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, to support COVID-19 laboratory capacity.

Speakers

Professor Daniel Bausch (MD, MPH&TM, FASTMH), Director of the UK-PHRST

Daniel Bausch is the Director of the UK-PHRST, established by LSHTM and Public Health England to respond to outbreaks, carry out research in outbreak-prone diseases, and build capacity for epidemic disease and outbreak response in low and middle income countries. He is a physician and virologist trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases, tropical medicine, and public health. He specialises in the research and control of emerging tropical viruses, with over 25 years’ experience in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Asia combating viruses such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, hantavirus, and SARS coronavirus.

Hilary Bower (MSc Epi MSc PH), Assistant Professor in Epidemiology, UK-PHRST

Hilary Bower is an Assistant Professor in Epidemiology and a deployable member of the UK-PHRST, with extensive field experience in Africa and Asia. Her research interests include emerging and epidemic infectious diseases and improving outbreak responses and interventions.

Dr Hana Rohan (BSc MSc PhD), Assistant Professor in Social Sciences, UK-PHRST

Hana Rohan is Assistant Professor in Social Science and a deployable member of the UK-PHRST. Hana has a longstanding interest in the health of vulnerable populations and in infectious disease and has worked on a number of health and governance research projects for NGOs in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Cambodia. She has also worked in operational positions in Sierra Leone during the Ebola response and in the post-Ebola recovery period, helping manage the Ebola alerts system, and then the Free Health Care medical commodities supply chain.

Dr Yewande Alim (DVM, MPH), Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Program Coordinator and co-chair of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Section for COVID-19 response, Africa CDC

Dr Yewande Alimi is the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Program Coordinator at Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and co-lead for the Africa Union Task force on AMR.  She co-chairs the Infection Prevention and Control Section for COVID-19 response across the continent and provides technical IPC support to the Africa Task Force for Coronavirus (AFTCOR IPC TWG). Drawing on a range of experience including veterinary medicine and public health policy and research, Dr Alimi currently leads the implementation of the Africa CDC Framework for AMR Control in Africa Union member states. She also leads on the One Health activities, development and implementation of one health programs within Africa CDC, across the African Union organizations and member states. She is also the One Health Technical Advisor for Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment Consortium.

Jonathan Ashcroft (BA., MSc., MD., PhD), Deputy Lead Microbiologist, UK-PHRST

Jonathan Ashcroft is a Deputy Lead Microbiologist and a deployable member of the UK-PHRST. He has represented the UK at the United Nations and the World Health Organisation, is currently engaged in numerous research and capacity-building initiatives, and is an honorary assistant professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Jonathan’s experience includes leading a team of 12 international scientists during the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa and was responsible for the diagnostic lab at an Ebola Treatment Centre in Sierra Leone and the training of national staff in Ebola diagnostics.
