FAQs

What is it?

The aim of the Missing Maps Project is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the developing world. With your help we can directly improve the lives of some of the planet’s most vulnerable people. Both beginners and experienced mappers are welcome to join this mapathon, please choose your ticket according to your level of mapping skills.

What area will we be mapping?

This month the focus will be on mapping the Bijagós Islands in Guinea Bissau . The islands provide an ideal setting in which to study infectious disease in detail. The archipelago contains 88 islets, of which about 20 are permanently inhabited. Guinea Bissau is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world with a human development index of 0.42, ranked 178 in the world. It is has high rates of malaria and Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis and Helminth infections are co-endemic. This project aims to map the epidemiology of malaria and neglected tropical diseases on the islands with a goal of disease elimination in the future. Your assistance with mapping is greatly appreciated in order to assist the study team to navigate the islands and potentially help to identify hotspots of disease transmission.

What do I need?

Just a laptop (you must bring your own with you), a mouse and enthusiasm (mouse isn’t absolutely necessary but makes the mapping A LOT faster).
