School welcomes new Director

The School is delighted to announce that its new Director will be Professor Peter Piot. He will take over the role from Professor Sir Andy Haines in September.

Baron Piot is currently Director of the Institute for Global Health and Professor of Global Health at Imperial College London. Following positions at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, the University of Nairobi and WHO, Professor Piot was Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations between 1995 and 2008.

Upon accepting the offer of appointment, Professor Piot noted, "I am delighted and honoured to accept the role of Director of the prime global public health institution in the world. I look forward to bringing my combined background of research, teaching, policy and management to the School, and to working with staff and students to improve health in the UK and globally."

The Chairman of the SchoolCouncil, Sir Tim Lankester, comments that Peter Piot has achieved astounding international distinction as a researcher, teacher, academic and public health leader. "The School is extremely fortunate in having recruited him as its new Director in succession to Sir Andy Haines. Sir Andy will be a hard act to follow but under Professor Piot's leadership, I am confident that the School will go on to even greater things across the range of its research and teaching activities and remain at the forefront of addressing the continuing scientific and public health challenges in improving health."
