Matt Egan is a Professor of Public Health. Much of Matt’s work is connected to the School of Public Health Research at LSHTM (SPHR@L). Established in April 2012, SPHR@L forms part of the wider NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR), comprising eight UK universities and research centres of excellence. Its research aims are to strengthen evidence and understanding for better decision-making on the social and environmental factors that determine public health. Areas of interest include health inequalities, alcohol, area based initiatives, local public health policy and practice, knowledge translation, public and practitioner involvement.
Previously, Matt has worked as a senior investigator scientist at MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow; and as a senior public health advisor at NHS Health Scotland. His research focuses on generating evidence to inform policy and practice. Methodological interests include evaluations of natural experiments; research synthesis and developing approaches for understanding public health systems. Topic interests include housing, urban regeneration, community empowerment, food and alcohol availability, and local government. Matt's educational background includes a PhD on the history of special needs education in Scotland.
Matt currently co-leads the NIHR SPHR Healthy Places Healthy Planet Programme. He is also joint PI of a NIHR PHR funded project: Health impact, process and economic evaluation of selective licensing schemes for private rented housing in England. NIHR154797.

(i) UKRI Population Health Improvement Network of Clusters - Health Hub: Systems Approaches to Commercial Determinants of Health and Equity, led by University of Bath; (ii) NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration led by Borough of Ealing.
