Teaching

I give lectures and run practicals on the 2nd term module Statistical Methods in Epidemiology and 3rd term module Advanced Statistical Methods in Epidemiology, and the distance learning module EPM304. I also contribute one lecture on the module Evaluation of Public Health Interventions in term 2.

Research

My research focuses on the design of intervention studies and evaluation of interventions to reduce the burden of tuberculosis (TB), particularly in settings of high HIV prevalence. Previously I have collaborated with researchers in The Gambia, Guinee and Guinea-Bissau on work investigating the role of genetic and environmental factors in susceptibility to TB. I have been senior statistician and co-investigator on various cluster randomized trials (CRTs) in South Africa and an individually randomized non-inferiority trial in conducted West and Southern Africa. The CRTs include an evaluation of Xpert MTB/RIF in South Africa embedded within their national rollout of the new TB diagnostic. I sit on Data Safety Monitoring Boards and Scientific Advisory Committees for phase II/III TB treatment trials and CRTs.

Over the last decade, I have also contributed to extensive research on adherence to TB medications. I have recently completed a collaboration with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and National TB Control program and Gates Foundation to design and evaluate interventions, including medication monitors, to improve adherence to TB treatment, using a pragmatic CRT design. I co-lead the Adherence Support Coalition to End TB research programme, funded through Unitaid, to evaluate digital adherence technologies in five countries. Over the last two years, I have also collaborated with researchers at Tufts University in the US and McGill University in Canada to conduct multiple systematic and scoping reviews to understand the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and implementation outcomes of TB digital adherence technologies.
