OpenPROMPT aims to measure the impact of long COVID among a cohort of adults registered with UK GP practices. Questionnaires covering a range of themes including quality of life, productivity and mental health will be made available electronically for participants to complete over a period of 12 weeks. These data will be merged with health records that give details of COVID diagnosis, symptoms and treatment. The results could reveal whether the impact of long COVID upon quality of life varies between different age groups, ethnicities, geographic regions, or because of underlying health conditions. These results can be converted into standardised measurements used by the NHS to measure the impact of illnesses and the cost of long COVID to health services.
To take part in the study you will need to use the Airmid app onto your smartphone. Airmid can be downloaded from the Apple Store and from Google Play. If you do not already have an Airmid login then you will need to use an NHS login – you may already have one or, if not, you can create an NHS login from within Airmid (make sure that you are able to receive SMS messages when creating an NHS login as you will need to be sent a verification code). Long COVID is estimated to affect 2.7 million people in the UK. One way of assessing the impact of long COVID is to measure quality-of-life through a standard questionnaire, which can then be used to understand the costs of long COVID to the NHS and wider economy. The impact of long COVID on these measures is not currently known. It is important to understand who is worst affected by long COVID and the cost to the NHS, so that strategies like booster vaccines can be prioritised to the right people.
OpenPROMPT aims to understand the impact of long COVID on quality-of-life in adults in English primary care.
We will ask people to participate in the study by downloading a smartphone app, and completing a series of questionnaires held within the app. Questionnaires will ask about quality of life, productivity and symptoms of long COVID. Participants will be asked to fill in the questionnaires once a month, for four months. Electronic reminders will be sent to participants to ask them to complete the questionnaires, which will take roughly 15 minutes to complete each month. Participants will also be asked to give consent for linkage of their questionnaire responses to their existing health records.
The results will tell us if long COVID has different quality-of-life and economic impacts among people of different ages, ethnicities, geographic regions, or because of any underlying health conditions. These results can be converted into standardised measurements used by the NHS to measure the impact of illnesses and the cost of long COVID to health services.
Together with other researchers studying long COVID, we will provide results to support long-term care, and make recommendations for prevention of long COVID in the future. At all stages we will ensure that the input of patients and the public is central to running the study and interpreting the outputs.
OpenPROMPT is a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the OpenSAFELY patient data platform at the University of Oxford, and TPP (which supplies clinical software to GP practices in the UK). The project is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and aims to complete its work by October 2023.

Step 1: Download Airmid app
To take part in the study you will need to use the Airmid UK app on your smartphone. Airmid can be downloaded from the Apple Store or from Google Play. Search for ‘Airmid UK’ to find the app.

Step 2: Login to Airmid
This will be done either through existing TPP SystmOne login details, or through an NHS login.
Existing TPP SystmOne login
Depending on your GP practice you may already have a TPP SystmOne username and password that would enable you to login to Airmid. You will probably have used these to access online services with your GP.
NHS login
If you do not already have an Airmid login (or do not know your TPP login details) then you will need to use an NHS login. You may already have an NHS login but, if not, you can create one from within Airmid (make sure that you are able to receive SMS messages when creating an NHS login as you will need to be sent a verification code). Read guidance on creating an NHS login. You will need photo identification and proof of address to create your NHS login.

Once you have created your login, and logged into Airmid, your device can use touch ID or Face ID to login, so that you don’t have to remember your login details.
Step 3: Find the OpenPROMPT study in the Airmid app
When you have logged into Airmid, go to the home page and scroll down to ‘Shortcuts’. Click “Help the NHS”. At the next screen, tap “Airmid cares”. You will see the OpenPROMPT study here.
Step 4: Read the Patient Information Leaflet and consent statements

Step 5: Move the ‘Opt-in’ toggle
If you have read and understood the Information Sheet, and agree to the consent statements, then you can join the study by clicking the ‘Opt-in’ toggle. The study questionnaires will then be ready for you to complete. These should take about 15 minutes to complete.
