Challenges to adequate ethical review of research with populations affected by humanitarian crises
This event is part of a series of dissemination webinars for the RECAP project, in partnership with the LSHTM Health in Humanitarian Crisis Centre.
Co-hosted with the American University of Beirut, this webinar will focus on the challenges to adequate ethical review of research with populations affected by humanitarian crises.
In this seminar, we will discuss the challenges and proposed solutions to strengthening adequate ethical review of research to protect refugee, disaster and conflict-affected populations.
Research conducted in humanitarian contexts faces a paradox – it needs to be done urgently, to inform the humanitarian response, but involves vulnerable populations and deals with sensitive subjects. This calls for careful ethical review in context.
In the seminar, we will touch on three areas:
- Research conducted by those with a lack of understanding of affected contexts and the risk to research subjects
- Researchers based in conflict settings who lack access to functional institutional review boards (IRBs)
- How NGOs have developed their own IRBs and the impact on research going forward
This panel will discuss these issues drawing on examples from different organisations working in humanitarian settings and different geographic regions.
The session will be chaired by Jocelyn DeJong, Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, Associate Provost, American University of Beirut.
