Community fundraising for LSHTM

Nina at marathon finish line

Staying active and fit is a positive way to support a healthy and happy life. LSHTM offers you the chance to take part in running and cycling challenge events, raising funds for our vital work, and supporting the next generation of global health leaders through the LSHTM Scholarship Fund.

Current and former students, employees, and friends of LSHTM can sign up to have the chance to snap up a free place in one of our community fundraising events, helping raise awareness and vital funds. Our fundraisers have a lot of fun along the way, with all the benefits of partaking in a sporting event as part of a motivated team, plus it’s a great way to get to know fellow alumni, students, and colleagues.

LSHTM is known for its pioneering research, and not least of all, for discovering the positive effect of exercise on our physical health. Seventy years ago, in 1953, epidemiologist and LSHTM alumnus Jerry (Jeremiah) Morris was the first person in medical history to establish the role of physical exercise in preventing ill health. Carrying on the legacy of Jerry's groundbreaking findings, in September 2023, 16 cyclists, including LSHTM’s Director Professor Liam Smeeth, amongst other staff, students, alumni and friends, cycled 55 miles from London to Brighton.

The team worked together to raise more than £10,000 to maintain diversity in our courses and widen access to education through the provision of scholarships, with more donations still coming in! Well done to all our amazing London to Brighton fundraisers in 2023!

Our teams of runners and cyclists have already raised thousands of pounds in recent years to widen access to education and support various areas of LSHTM’s groundbreaking work, from the Val Curtis Memorial Fund, to the Health and Humanitarian Crises Centre. We will support your fundraising journey with instructions for how to set up, personalise and share your fundraising page, regular updates, and peer support and motivation. With sportspeople already expressing their interest in running and cycling for LSHTM in 2024, there has never been a better time to get involved, set yourself a personal challenge, and be part of a motivated team by taking part in one of our events.
