Miss Ursula Gazeley

Research Student - MPhil/PhD - Epidemiology & Population Health

United Kingdom

My research focuses predominantly on the measurement of maternal mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of maternal mortality/morbidity is greatest. I conduct mixed-methods research to contribute to improvements in maternal health in high-burden settings, with experience in epidemiology, demographic methods, and qualitative research.

I have worked with colleagues at the WHO on maternal mortality estimation and global cause of death estimates. Before my PhD, I worked with IDinsight in India, South Africa, and Ghana on health programme monitoring & evaluation and implementation research.

I have run the PASS scheme to help students with Basic Epidemiology and Statistics for Basic Epidemiology (STEPH) courses. I have also helped teach Demographic Methods/ Population Dynamics and Projections MSc courses.

Research

- Women's long-term outcomes in the extended postpartum period after pregnancy and childbirth – including women's risk of death beyond 42 days, causes of death beyond 42 days, and women's long-term outcomes after severe maternal morbidity "maternal near miss" complications.
- Estimation of the cumulative burden of maternal morbidity across women's reproductive life course – the "lifetime risk of maternal near miss"
- Adolescent perinatal mental health
