Hi everyone! I’m Winston Lam, an intercalating medical student from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) studying the MSc Control of Infectious Diseases (CID) here at LSHTM. Among the many fascinating aspects of NTDs, zoonotic infections and their control strategies, this MSc’s breadth of module choices, from conflict and health to vector identification, and international exposure really attracted me, particularly with my background in international peacebuilding advocacy as a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA).
Research interests or career goals
As an aspiring clinician-scientist, I currently have particular interests in paediatrics, improving health outcomes and communicable disease control in humanitarian settings, and vector-borne diseases and their targeted control strategies, especially mosquito and insect-borne ones including dengue, malaria and Chagas disease.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I found that LSHTM’s MSc CID perfectly bridged both a study of core infection biology and their topical public health interventions. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do our summer projects internationally, and the unique, inspiring backgrounds of fellow students and professors from all sectors and experiences, are just a few of the fascinating aspects that further add to the rich experience of being a CID student at the School.
Any extra information
As an intercalating medical student with roots in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles, I would be more than happy to chat about anything regarding my degree and intercalating it, life here, my application experience, career goals, and so much more — drop me a line!
