What will the enlargement of the EU mean for health?

The European Union is on the verge of a major new enlargement to the east. But what impact will this have on the health and wellbeing of EU citizens?

Laura Maclehose, Research Fellow with the London School of Hygiene's Environmental Epidemiology Unit, and Martin McKee, Professor in European Public Health within the School's Health Services Research Unit, are guest editors of a special issue of EuroHealth, looking at the implications for health and health care systems of EU enlargement.

Authors from both current EU member states and candidate countries will examine topics such as the possibility and implications of patients crossing borders, health and safety and fair trade, the movement of health professionals and tobacco control in the issue, entitled Health and EU Enlargement.
