The Heart Healthy Hoods (HHH) project main objective is to analyse the impact of the physical and social urban environment in relation to residents’ cardiovascular health. Manuel Franco through a Starting Grant of the European Research Council conducts the HHH project in Madrid. An interdisciplinary team of geographers, sociologists, and primary health care professionals and epidemiologists study urban characteristics directly related to eating patterns, physical activity levels, smoking and alcohol consumption. The HHH project has produced so far seven research articles, four funded ancillary studies, a photobook and a public exhibition. http://www.hhhproject.eu

Information about speaker: Manuel Franco trained both in Madrid, Spain and Berlin, Germany to obtain his MD. As Fulbright Scholar he joined the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to obtain his PhD and Post Doctoral fellowship in Epidemiology.
His work focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and its major risk factors. He studies how different social characteristics relate to CVD and CVD risk factors. He is the Principal Investigator of the HHH project and its participatory Photovoice Villaverde ancillary study on food urban environment.
