Global Health Justice and the Search for Better Medicines: From ‘Bad Pharma’ to ‘Good Pharma’
The imposition of long, strong IP rights is worsening the large, global health inequalities within and between nations. Ironically, these legal rights and barriers have produced few medical advances while increasing the risks of serious harm. They also reward biased testing, compromised science, misleading information for patients and their doctors, and over-prescribing. This talk will discuss an alternate, working model and political economy that could develop clinically superior, safer drugs at much lower cost and prices.
Speaker: Donald Light is a medical and economic sociologist who does policy research on institutional and global bioethics concerning access and quality problems for medical services or drugs. Recent research analyses the epidemic of harmful side effects from drugs (The Risks of Prescription Drugs), institutional barriers to more effective, safer drugs, and global vaccine policy. Light’s new book, based on his time at Harvard University at its Safra Center for Ethics, is Good Pharma: the Public Health Model of the Mario Negri Institute (Palgrave 2015).
