Launch: Lancet Commission on Diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa
The launch of the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Diabetes in sub Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa faces so many health challenges that diabetes might not seem to feature largely among them. However, the number of people with diabetes in the region has increased very rapidly in the past three decades, and many people are unaware that they have the disease, leading to high rates of complications and premature mortality. Weak health systems in sub-Saharan Africa that are ill-prepared to treat complex chronic diseases are already struggling to cope with diabetes and other NCDs. The challenge of diabetes faced by sub-Saharan Africa is enormous, and will get rapidly worse if effective measures are not taken.
In 2014, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Diabetes sub-Saharan Africa convened a team of academics, clinicians, economists, and people who work in governmental and non-governmental organisations to identify targets and milestones for diabetes, and ways of strengthening health systems in sub-Saharan Africa to make cost-effective intervention possible. This event will present and debate the results of these discussions.
