Peter Piot pays tribute to Professor Bongani Mayosi

We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Professor Bongani Mayosi, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town.

Professor Bongani Mayosi was a world-renowned clinical research scientist and cardiologist who specialised in rheumatic fever, tuberculosis pericarditis, and cardiomyopathy. He had an exemplary career, as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, a former President of the College of Physicians of South Africa, and an A-rated National Research Foundation researcher. He was also the recipient of South Africa’s highest honour, the Order of Mapungubwe.

Professor Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who worked with Professor Mayosi recently on the Lancet Commission on the Future of Health in sub-Saharan Africa said; “I am profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Bongani. It is hard to overstate his contributions to the health science community. Bongani was not only a leading expert in the field of cardiology but he was deeply conscious of Africa’s changing demographics and its shifting health needs. He was a visionary researcher and was deeply committed to the education and training of the next generation of clinical-scientists in sub-Saharan Africa. He was an invaluable and wise voice on our African Commission.

“We have lost not only a kind and compassionate friend but one of Africa’s brightest talents. He will be greatly missed. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time."
