Dr Kalpana Sabapathy

Clinical Assistant Professor HCC

United Kingdom

I am a clinical epidemiologist and joined LSHTM in 2012. I have recently been awarded a Wellcome Trust post-doctoral fellowship to examine the hypertension in early adulthood in Zimbabwe. I am also PI on a study examining community approaches to improving detection and monitoring of high blood pressure in Zimbabwe, funded by the Medical Research Council. I lead the 13-30y BP research group within the LSHTM Centre for Global Chronic Conditions, focusing on evidence gaps and priorities for research in young people with elevated blood pressure.
I previously worked in HIV, as an investigator on the landmark HPTN 071 (PopART) trial, leading nested studies on the acceptability of the PopART testing and treatment interventions in Zambia and South Africa; as an Academic Clinical Fellow in genito-urinary medicine and HIV at Imperial College NHS Trust; and as field doctor and later HIV Advisor for Medecins Sans Frontieres.
I maintain clinical practice as a part-time GP in the NHS. I have recently returned to full-time work at LSHTM after several years working part-time focusing instead on clinical practice and my young daughter. I mentor in the LSHTM mentorship and Be-MEntorship programme, serve on the LSHTM Employment Model Review Programme Board and am committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in academia.

I supervise a DrPH student (Dr. Eun Seok Kim - Integrated prevalence study of Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted Helminthiasis, identification of risk factors for Hookworm persistence, and impact of fatty meal co-administration and double-dosing on Albendazole effectiveness among school aged children in Mayuge district, Uganda: Implications for the Mayuge NTDs Elimination (MANE) Project). I am on the advisory committee for a PhD student (Ms. Rumbi Gumbie - Integrating sexual and reproductive health into clinic-based HIV services in Zimbabwe (TSIME)).
