The Centre for History in Public Health (CHiPH) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) would like to hear from mid-career researchers who want to apply for competitive personal awards from prestigious funders.
We are particularly keen to hear from historians working on global health or tropical medicine, or humanities researchers (including history, literature, law, philosophy) working on health inequalities or planetary health. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, as long as they are rooted in historical history or the humanities methods.
Suitable funders and schemes include the ERC Consolidator Grants and Wellcome Career Development grants. (Note that for the ERC award, applicants will be required to apply for all of their LSHTM-contracted time to be funded by ERC and this must be at least the minimum time commitment required for the scheme. For the Wellcome Career Development Grant, in meeting the terms of the award LSHTM would commit to undertaking a formal review of the awardee’s future at the organisation including the possibility of a without duration contract, but this would still be subject to the awardee meeting standard LSHTM criteria.)
Established in 2003, CHiPH develops historical understanding of public health, health systems, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and global health. We are also home to an emerging Public Health Humanities network, developing the place of a wider range of arts and humanities research within public health. Our unique location within the largest multi-disciplinary public health group in Europe, LSHTM’s Faculty of Public Health and Policy, enables us to lead the way in connecting history, the humanities, and health.
LSHTM values collaboration, diversity and impact. We aim to support new colleagues with the vision to become research leaders, who also aspire to be excellent educators and collaborators. We are also keen to support researchers from backgrounds that are currently under-represented within academia.
We are interested to hear from you to explore whether CHiPH may offer the most exciting and supportive environment for your career development. Informal enquiries are welcome, to answer your questions and to discuss whether this would be the right fit. Please contact janet.weston@lshtm.ac.uk in the first instance.
For anyone invited to progress their application, support will include introductions to potential collaborators and expert advice from the LSHTM Strategic Research Office.
To submit your expression of interest, please email the following three documents to chiph@lshtm.ac.uk by Monday 30 September 2024:
- CV, including a list of publications and any grants/fellowships to which you have contributed and your role in winning and implementing them;
- Research proposal outline (3 pages in total: 1 page on your previous research, 2 pages on future plans).
- A brief cover letter, including your motivation for career development at LSHTM and details (including deadlines) of the fellowship/award(s) for which you plan to apply.
Please do not send any other correspondence to this inbox, and please note that submissions without these three attachments cannot be considered.
Following the deadline, we will consider which potential applicants LSHTM can support with an external application. If you submit an expression of interest, you can expect a response before the end of October 2024.
