It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of Dr. Markus Haacker.
Markus spent a year in the faculty of Public Health and Policy (PHP) and worked on several projects with colleagues at LSHTM. He went on to hold affiliations with Harvard, University College London (UCL) and the Centre for Global Development (CGD).
In the early 2000s, Markus was instrumental in developing the field of macro-economics and HIV. He continued to be a thought leader throughout his career, being the go-to person for understanding the fiscal impact of HIV for the Global Fund, UNAIDS and the World Bank to name a few. Many of us also remember his active participation in the International Aids Economics Network. He was a valued member of the community of economists who fought to ensure HIV received the attention that people living with it deserve.
The field of health economics, and many at LSHTM, will dearly miss his critical voice.
