As ever, this year, saw a host of outstanding applications submitted for this prestigious award, now in its seventh year, presenting the Stephen Lawn Memorial Prize Selection Committee with a very difficult decision to make. Dr. Andew Kerkhoff is a physician-scientist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Dr. Andew Kerkhoff is a physician-scientist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). His research has two main focuses: (1) He has more than a decade of experience evaluating novel tests and strategies to improve the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on low-cost, point-of-care tools. (2) He also applies implementation science methods to improve individual- and population-level outcomes through the development, implementation, and evaluation of equity-focused, effective, scalable, and sustainable TB, HIV, and COVID-19 care engagement strategies in the United States and Zambia. Dr. Kerkhoff is an Associate Program Director for Curriculum for the UCSF Implementation Science Training Program and also serves as the Director of the UCSF CFAR Implementation Science Interest Group.
On hearing of his award, Dr Kerkoff responded:
“I am truly honoured and profoundly thankful to be this year's recipient of the Stephen Lawn Memorial Prize. I am aware of the immense significance of this recognition, and I receive it with deep gratitude and a reinforced sense of responsibility toward improving the lives of persons affected by TB and HIV.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Steve Lawn Memorial Prize steering group, The Union, LSHTM TB Centre, and the UCT Desmond Tutu HIV Centre for this incredible honour. Knowing that my efforts resonate with the mission and values upheld by the Stephen Lawn Memorial Prize is both encouraging and immensely inspiring. On a personal note, given Steve's mentorship and outsized role in inspiring and supporting me to pursue this career trajectory, it personally means so much to me to be selected for this award honouring his legacy.”
Many congratulations to Dr Kerkhoff who was awarded his prize at the UNION Conference, Paris, November 2023. He will be attending the Stephen Lawn Memorial Lecture on 19th March 2023 which is being hosted by the TB Centre partners, the Desmond Tutu Centre, UCT, Cape Town.
