External call for mid-career researchers interested in applying for prestigious fellowships

The Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (ITD) in the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is seeking mid-career researchers wanting to apply for competitive fellowships or personal awards from prestigious funders. Suitable funders include the ERC, Wellcome, NIHR, MRC and BBSRC, as well as others that will support candidates from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. We offer mentoring, in a highly supportive and collaborative environment, and are particularly keen to support researchers from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in global health research leadership.

The ITD vision is to deliver outstanding contributions to reduce the disease burden related to infections and global health inequity. To achieve this, we have staff taking a wide range of approaches, from discovery of biological mechanisms through to clinical research, and impact on policy and practice. Among the multi-disciplinary approaches we support, we are particularly interested to hear from candidates who want to investigate molecular and cellular processes of immune responses to infection, vector biology and tools to reduce infection transmission, and clinical interventions in lower and middle-income countries. LSHTM values collaboration, diversity and impact and we are looking to support new colleagues with the vision to become research leaders who also aspire to be excellent educators and collaborators.

We offer a dynamic collaborative environment, with colleagues employing a wide range of basic biological discovery, translational, epidemiological, clinical, and public health approaches. Benefits in leading research at LSHTM include:

  • International excellence in research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice
  • New Containment Level 3 / Schedule 5 laboratory facilities and new Biological Services Facilities
  • Multi-disciplinary Centres, including Malaria Centre, TB Centre, Vaccines Centre, Maternal, Child, Adolescent and Reproductive Health Centre
  • Extensive network of collaborators both within the UK and overseas
  • Vibrant academic and social environment in central London.

We are interested to hear from you, to explore whether ITD may offer the most exciting and supportive environment for your career development. We look forward to your expression of interest to help us determine if this would be promising for you at this stage of your career. The type of support we will provide to those selected will include mentorship, introductions to potential collaborators and networks locally and internationally, and expert support from our Strategic Research Office before, during and after the competitive fellowship process.

To submit your expression of interest, please email the following to david.conway@lshtm.ac.uk (Prof David Conway, ITD Associate Dean for Research):

  • A brief cover letter, including your motivation for career development at LSHTM and specify the funding schemes of the competitive fellowships or personal awards that you plan to apply for, including the intended submission dates.
  • CV, including a list of grants to which you have contributed and your role in winning and implementing these, and your list of publications (highlighting your 5 most significant publications with an explanation of your role and the importance of the work).
  • Research proposal outline (recommended to be approximately 3 pages in total, including ~1 page on your previous research, ~2 pages on future plans).

These will be reviewed by the relevant Head of Department, Associate Dean for Research, a member of the Strategic Research Office, and a member of the Faculty EDI Committee. We aim to respond and make a recommendation within three weeks. This will then inform the ITD Dean who will make a decision on suitability, and if this is approved we will be able to offer you guidance in the preparation of your proposal. Ideally, we encourage you to send your expression of interest some months ahead of the first intended funding deadline, to enable the best advice and engagement.

We look forward to hearing from you.
