MRC (UK) The Gambia launches Unit Review 04-07

Today marks the launch of a new report giving an overview of MRC (UK) The Gambia’s scientific work over the past four years.
The unit’s science portfolio, re-organised in 2003, consists of three programmes (Bacterial Diseases, Malaria and Viral Diseases), cross-cut by epidemiology, genetics, immunology and translational studies. The Nutrition Group’s work, based in Keneba, is also featured in the review.

This period has been marked by a major injection of scientific talent into the unit, including the appointment of the Director of Research and Head of the Viral Diseases Programme, Professor Sarah Rowland-Jones, who shares her strategy on page 8 of the review.

2007 marked sixty years of MRC in The Gambia, and Unit Director Professor Tumani Corrah offers a glimpse into some of the unit’s most outstanding achievements in his Welcome address.

The period has also seen significant changes in the area of science support, summarized by the Director of Operations and Administration Mr Mark Radford on page 12.
