The Medical Research Council Group Human Resources Director Sally-Louise Smith visited MRC Unit The Gambia (MRCG) for the first time on 29 January to 5 February 2016. The purpose of her visit was to look at and discuss MRCG’s Human Resources Initiatives.
Sally-Louise Smith is a member of the MRC Management Board, and her roles includes; developing and implementing strategies and policies relating to the employment, performance, remuneration of staff working in units and institutes. She is in charge of the delivery of change projects, employee relations and engagement. She is also responsible for corporate Human Resource policies relating to the wider scientific community.

Sally-Louise was accompanied by all the Medical Research Council UK, Head Office Human Resources Team, which includes Rebecca Leigh, Head of Reward/Deputy HR Director, Paul Tait, Head of Human Resources, London Region and Africa, and Abi Lye, Executive Assistant. During her visit, Sally-Louise met with the Leadership Board of MRCG, the Scientific Coordinating Committee, Operations team members, and the Africa Research Excellence Fund Director, Professor Tumani Corrah. On Monday 1 February 2016, Sally-Louise was also a panelist for the Women in Science Discussion organized by the Management Lab of MRCG.

Sally had the opportunity to visit Keneba and Basse Field Stations to observe field work/activity, meet scientists as well as department heads. Whilst in Basse, Sally-Louise visited the Basse Health Centre and on her way back to Fajara she had a stop at Walli kunda to visit the entomological site. On World Cancer Day, Sally-Louise accompanied Director Professor Umberto D’Alessandro to the Cancer Walk organized by the Office of the First Lady, Madam Zineb Jammeh in Banjul. To commemorate World Cancer Day, which was attended by 5000 people, MRCG was presented with a Cancer Award for its immense contribution in cancer research.

The visit ended with seminar presentation by Sally-Louise on Corporate Update: HR Continues to support Science.
