Scientific Officer, Momodou Cox, has recently been awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship to commence a one-year residential MSc in Immunology of Infectious Diseases at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in September 2016. The MSc course (Immunology of Infectious diseases) would give Momodou the opportunity to focus on attaining a broader understanding of infectious diseases and provide the knowledge, skills and confidence he needs to pursue a PhD.
Chevening awards are prestigious and highly competitive scholarships awarded to emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Masters degree at any UK University. The scholarship is funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations, presented through the British Embassy in The Gambia. The award provides a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically.

The Chevening Scholarship is one of three scholarships Mr Cox has acquired since joining The Unit in 2004. In recognition of his technical abilities in 2007, Momodou undertook a 4-year distance learning MRCG funded Foundation Degree in Biomedical Science, in which he emerged with Distinction. In recognition of his academic excellence and contribution in various clinical trials, he was awarded  a European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) scholarship . The scholarship was acquired through MRCG to complete a BSc in Biomedical Science at Kingston University, London, where he graduated with First Class honours in 2012. Upon graduation, Momodou returned to The Unit and continued working with the infant immunology group as a Scientific Officer under the supervision of Dr Ed Clarke and Prof Beate Kampmann. As a proud winner of the award, Momodou stated, “I am honoured to be among the first MRC Unit The Gambia staff to be awarded such a prestigious fellowship which offers full financial support along with the opportunity to become part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network.”

Professor Kampmann stated: “I am very pleased that Mr Cox has been awarded this particular scholarship, as it will not only enable him to pursue enhanced training in immunology by acquiring an MSc, but also to contribute to a network of emerging leadership figures throughout many countries represented under the Chevening agreement. I am sure, Momodou will make the most of this opportunity and it is an honour for MRCG to have one of our promising young scientists selected for this award.”
