With a vision of a world free of tropical infectious diseases, scientists and experts from various organisations dedicated to reducing the worldwide burden of tropical infectious diseases and improving global health, converged for the 65th American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The annual meeting which took place from November 13 - 17, 2016, attracted various professionals in tropical medicine, global health, infectious diseases and the pharmaceuticals industry from different parts of the world, including Burkina Faso, Brazil, United States and The Gambia.

A team of 10 scientist and early career investigators from MRC Unit The Gambia (MRCG) led by professor Umberto D’Alessandro, Unit Director, attended the annual ASTMH meeting. The members of staff also in attendance are Dr Annette Erhart, Dr Davis Nwakanma, Dr Alfred Ngwa, Sukai Ceesay, Dr Julia Mwesigwa, Dr Jane Achan, Dr Sophie Roetynck, Serign Ceesay, Dr Jahangir Hossain and Dr Antoine Claessens.

This year's meeting featured about 33 sessions, including a pre-meeting course, symposia, scientific posters, scientific presentations, award presentations, meet-the-professors and exhibits award. The three topics most covered during the sessions were malaria, global health, parasitology and virology.

During the conference members of staff from MRCG submitted abstracts and presented scientific posters on their research areas. Staff also took part in various symposia and discussion sessions focused on epidemiology and malaria research.
