Think TB: Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign for Gambian Youth

A one day interactive training workshop, funded by the Public Engagement small grants scheme of the LSHTM, was held at Methodist Academy Senior Secondary School on Saturday 24th November 2018. The training was conducted using creative methodologies such as infographics, games activities, and a TB musical to engage students and teachers. The workshop aimed at assessing the understanding of the students about TB prior to the workshop. It will also build on their existing knowledge, correcting misconceptions about TB and empowering them as agent of change in the school and immediate living environment. During the workshop, roles and responsibilities expected from the student on the recognition of TB disease symptoms and appropriate measures to take in the control of TB was discussed.

The workshop equipped the students and their teachers with knowledge about the different types of TB disease, symptoms, spread and prevention. The students are selected as TB ambassadors to engage the community and contribute to TB control in The Gambia.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr Muyiwa Owolabi (Clinical Coordinator Tuberculosis Case Contact Studies (TBCC) at MRCG at LSHTM) , with the TBCC team (Monica Davis, Alhaji Jobe, Abdoulie Tunkara, Sainabou Njie, Babou Faye, Momodou Jallow, Awa Touray, Madeline Gibba Gomez, Gambia Sowe, Alpha Omar Jallow, Pa Camara, Isatou Loum) and co-facilitator Alieu Wuri (National TB Programme, The Gambia).
