Celebrating World Breast Feeding Week
The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine joins the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) and international organisations in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week.
Over the years, the MRCG at LSHTM’s research on breastfeeding has supported the development of WHO’s Recommendation for Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 months by demonstrating that a mother’s milk output is protected even against environmental threats including food shortages. A number of additional studies are underway and funded to commence when the COVID-19 epidemic permits.
Breastfeeding is one of the most important of all ways to enhance the survival and growth of babies worldwide. As the national lead, NaNA supports Baby Friendly Hospitals and Baby Friendly Communities.
The theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is ‘Support BreastFeeding for a Healthier Planet’.
