The Quality Department plays a crucial role in assuring laboratory diagnosis, research activities, and research support activities meet applicable quality standards and best practices. The standards that apply to our line of work are Good Research Practice (GRP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), and ISO 15189.
The department is responsible for identifying, implementing, and maintaining quality management systems across all areas of the Unit. The quality department works closely with many stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, laboratory staff, administrative personnel, and other technical personnel to assure adherence to the quality standards stated above. Our responsibilities include, document control and management, risk management, audits and evaluations, management reviews, training, accreditation, and continuous improvement initiatives, such as suggestions for improvement, CAPA management, and complaints management and resolution.
We offer similar services to other institutions and can support these institutions with the following:
- Training in standards and other quality-related topics
- Standards implementation
- Audits for audit readiness and epidemic preparedness
- Accreditation to ISO 15189 and GCLP
- Liaising with accreditation bodies such as SANAS, KENAS, Qualogy and other bodies in Africa

Management monitoring and review
The Quality Management Department promotes regular evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the quality management system and the associated processes. These include internal audits, external audits, and management reviews to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and quality standards as well as to identify areas of improvement. This involves analysing and addressing non-conformities and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
Accreditation and Quality Standards
MRCG at LSHTM has proudly held accreditation to ISO 15189:2012 and GCLP for over a decade. This sustained accreditation not only ensures our compliance but also positions us as a competitive centre of excellence in the sub-region, underscoring our ongoing dedication to maintaining high quality standards in all facets of our research and operations.
The Unit may strive to pursue and obtain additional quality certifications if deemed relevant.
