Overview
Overview - Control of Sexually Transmitted Infections
Paragraph

During this module, students will gain understanding of the epidemiology of STIs, STI control measures in different contexts and among various high-risk groups with a focus on low- and middle-income settings; and how to plan, organise, monitor and evaluate, and budget for an STI control programme.

The overall module aim is to provide students with an overview of the principles and practice of control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), mainly focusing on resource limited settings and/or settings with high incidence of STIs.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module a student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying public health control of STIs;
  2. Set priorities for STI control programmes, and select between a variety of available intervention options;
  3. Plan (including resource planning), monitor and evaluate public health programmes for the control of STIs.

Mode of delivery

This module will be delivered primarily as face to face teaching with possibility to join for online MSc SRHPP students – for this reason the module is considered ‘hybrid’.

Where specific teaching methods (lectures, seminars, discussion groups) are noted in this module specification, these will be delivered using preferably face to face sessions at LSHTM but synchronous online platform for students and facilitators/lecturers will also be established. There will be a combination of live and interactive activities (synchronous learning) as well as recorded or self-directed study (asynchronous learning) for advanced preparations. All lectures will be recorded.

Assessment

The assessment for this module has been designed to measure student learning against the module intended learning outcomes (ILOs) as listed above. Formative assessment methods will be used to measure students’ progress and understanding the ‘Theory of change’ framework underpinning the development of control program proposals. This will be assessed (but not graded) as a group exercise. The grade for summative assessment(s) only will go towards the overall award GPA.

Summative assessment will be the development of a short proposal for an STI control programme in a preselected country/population scenario combination to be chosen from a set list by each student. Assessment will consist of a short individual essay with a limited number of Annexes, e.g. a basic log frame with monitoring indicators to demonstrate understanding of theory of change.
