The overall module aim is to develop an understanding of the diverse nature and consequences of the interaction between parasites and the host immune response.
Intended learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:
- Systematically explain the most important immunological features relating to the major parasitic infections of man.
- Critically distinguish how the interaction between the immune response and the parasite may result in immune-mediated pathology and/or protection against infection.
- Summarise the mechanisms used by parasites to avoid or exploit the immune response.
- Critically evaluate the methodologies for studying the immunology of parasitic infections.
Session Content
The module is expected to cover the following topics:
- A brief review of basic immunological principles and basic parasitology.
- Immunology of trypanosomatids, Toxoplasma, gut protozoa.
- Immunology of malaria.
- Immunology of schistosomes, filarial worms and gut nematodes.
Mode of delivery
This module is delivered predominantly face-to-face. Where specific teaching methods (lectures, seminars, discussion groups) are noted in this module specification these will be delivered by predominantly face-to-face sessions. There will be a combination of live and interactive activities (synchronous learning) as well as self-directed study (asynchronous learning).
Assessment
The assessment for this module has been designed to measure student learning against the module intended learning outcomes (ILOs) as listed above. Formative assessment methods may be used to measure students’ progress. The grade for summative assessment(s) only will go towards the overall award GPA.
The assessment for this module will take place in a classroom.
Assessment will be in the form of a 1.5-hour unseen written test based on lecture material (100% of module mark).
Credits
- CATS: 15
- ECTS: 7.5
