A Transformative Learning Experience
My name is Noidavanh, a medical professional currently working as a physician in the northern part of Laos. With a background in internal medicine and a passion for infectious diseases, I was eager to expand my knowledge and skills. The Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) programme has been a life-changing experience, providing me with practical expertise in tropical disease management, outbreak response, and laboratory techniques.
Why I Chose the DTM&H Programme
I was motivated to pursue this course because of my work with infectious disease patients and my interest in clinical research. Given the challenges faced in low- and middle-income countries, I wanted to gain in-depth knowledge on managing tropical diseases and apply this expertise to improve healthcare in my home country. A former professor who had attended LSHTM spoke highly of the programme, which further strengthened my decision to apply.
The Advantages of In-Person Learning
One of the standout aspects of the DTM&H programme is the hands-on approach to learning. The in-person sessions, particularly the laboratory practicals, provided an immersive experience that online learning cannot fully replicate. Engaging in small-group discussions allowed for meaningful exchanges with peers from diverse backgrounds. Having direct access to experienced professors and experts made it easier to ask questions and deepen my understanding of complex topics.
One of the most exciting parts of the course for me was working in the laboratory. I particularly enjoyed preparing and staining malaria specimens and examining them under the microscope. Identifying parasites firsthand was both challenging and rewarding. Additionally, the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students from around the world was invaluable—we shared different perspectives on disease management based on our respective healthcare settings.
How the Programme Will Impact My Career
This course has equipped me with crucial skills that I will take back to my hospital. Clinical research in my institution is still in its early stages, and there is a lack of experience in conducting high-quality studies. With the knowledge gained from LSHTM, I plan to contribute to building a stronger research culture, improving patient management, and enhancing disease surveillance in my region.
What Makes LSHTM Unique
Apart from the world-class faculty, one of the highlights of studying at LSHTM is its student-centred approach. The interactive teaching methods, well-structured electronic learning platforms, and small-group sessions create an engaging and supportive learning environment. The diversity of the student body also adds to the richness of the experience, as we learn from one another’s experiences with different diseases and healthcare systems.
Advice for Future Students
For anyone considering the DTM&H programme, my advice is simple: apply! This course is an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in tropical medicine, learn from top experts, and connect with a global network of medical professionals. You won’t regret it!
If I had to sum up my time at LSHTM in three words, they would be: student-centred, high-quality, and transformative.
Exploring London
Beyond academics, this was my first time in London, and I loved exploring the city. From its rich history to its vibrant cultural scene, there was always something new to discover. I hope to return in the future, perhaps with my family, to experience even more of what this incredible city has to offer.
Studying at LSHTM has been an enriching journey, and I am excited to take what I've learned and apply it to my work back home. Thank you to the faculty, my peers, and the LSHTM community for making this experience truly unforgettable.
