I am Charlotte Racheal Okello, a current student studying MSc Clinical Trials by Distance Learning at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Being my first time studying online, I initially struggled with a low level of self-discipline. Distance learning requires you to manage your time effectively, stay motivated, and keep up with assignments without the structure of physical classes. To work on this, I have established timelines designated for studying and working on my assignments, while making sure to attend all study-related webinars. This has helped me stay consistent and dedicated to my study.
Engaging with other students online
Balancing responsibilities related to work, family, and other commitments alongside studies can be overwhelming sometimes, but I have found LSHTM’s flexible study design very helpful in this regard, because I can always alter my study time to my convenience. I also take care of my well-being by allocating time for relaxation, socializing, and taking nature walks while I listen to audio recordings of my course material, and set monthly study goals.
My early fears regarding a lack of community and feeling isolated as a distance learner were another challenge, but not anymore! I have so far built friendships with fellow students, some of whom I met during our virtual webinars, and others whom I met through participating in our module forums. Some friends and I have set up a virtual study arrangement where we support each other, share ideas, and hold each other accountable.
Supportive learning environment
At the very start of my course, I encountered technical difficulties navigating some online platforms and software. Thanks to the dedicated support teams at LSHTM for each course, I have been and continue to be able to seek help and guidance from them. I cannot emphasize enough how helpful and comforting this has been.
Some days, I still struggle to engage with my course material because I am used to a more interactive physical classroom environment. However, through our module forums, LSHTM has made it extremely easy for me to ask questions, participate in forum discussions, and share ideas with fellow students and a supportive community of tutors.
My time at LSHTM thus far has been interesting, and I am particularly thankful that despite the challenges, I have learned to foster self-motivation and self-discipline, celebrate small milestones, and maintain positivity.
It has been delightful sharing my story with you!
