Kaitlin Santana

Educational/professional background

Bachelors in Health Science and minor in Sociology from Boston University (USA).

Prior to my program I did wet-lab research involving gene editing for various ocular diseases, including activities like disease monitoring utilizing optometric imaging equipment in mice, and antibody labeling and optimization.

Research interests or career goals

My current research interests and passions involve increasing accessibility to eye care, especially for disadvantaged groups. I’m specifically interested in pursuing research on equitable care, along the lines of socio-economic status (occupation, income/wealth, and education levels), race, indigenous status, and ethnicity, and how to create and implement place-based sustainable solutions for accessing care. I’m also secondarily curious to explore how to create global benchmarks for researching ocular care accessibility and successful program implementation.

After my MSc Public Health for Eye Care I intend on pursuing a doctorate (or two)! My dream jobs involve working for non-governmental organizations, like the World Health Organization or the International Agency for Preventing Blindness, and consulting countries on how to develop national eye care programs!

Research interests or career goals

I chose the MSc Public Health for Eye Care because I was fascinated about how access to primary eye care could be measured at the international and global level, and how we can create sustainable interventions to promote access to ocular practitioners, especially amongst various vulnerable groups. This MSc perfectly combined my interest in vision care and my passion for equity research.

I’m happy to answer your questions and wish you all the best in your journeys!
