Chickens and eggs: The Global Challenges Research Fund One Health Poultry Hub interdisciplinary approach to tackling antimicrobial resistance

Professor Fiona Tomley will share preliminary results of the interdisciplinary work the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) One Health Poultry Hub is carrying out in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam assessing antimicrobial use in chicken farming, and providing evidence to support effective change.

More than 1.3 trillion eggs and 100 million tonnes of chicken meat are produced annually, and global production is forecast to grow ~50% by 2050 with much of this occurring in Asia. Rapidly intensifying chicken production is associated with public health risks, including the development of antimicrobial resistance.

In this webinar Fiona will present the interdisciplinary work the GCRF One Health Poultry Hub is carrying out in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam to assess the use of antimicrobial drugs in chicken farming and provide evidence to support effective change. The project has adopted a ‘belt and braces’ approach that combines:

  1. ethnographic research and community engagement to gain qualitative insights into drug usage and attitudes of stakeholders;
  2. the forensic detection of antimicrobial residues in chicken meat and feathers;
  3. genomic sequencing of microbial samples from chickens and people.

These findings will be integrated with further Hub research that is exploring the social, economic, cultural and regulatory factors shaping chicken production in different settings.

Speaker

Professor Fiona Tomley, Director of the GCRF One Health Poultry Hub and Professor of Experimental Parasitology, Royal Veterinary College, London

Fiona trained as a microbiologist, completing a PhD and post-doctoral work in virology before dedicating much of her career to the study of gut health and protozoan pathogens of chickens. In recent years she has championed One Health, an integrated unifying approach that recognises the linkages between the health of people, animals, plants and the shared environment, and which mobilises multiple disciplines, sectors and communities to foster wellbeing and tackle threats.

In 2019 she was appointed Director of the One Health Poultry Hub, an impact-driven, interdisciplinary programme that seeks to understand, detect and reduce the risk of emergence and transmission of zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance from rapidly intensifying poultry production systems.
