COVID-19 pandemic and the experiences of disabled people in the UK: Impacts on death and life

Dr Williamson will describe how large general practitioners databases were used to show that people with learning disabilities were at much higher risk of hospitalisation or death from COVID-19 in the UK, compared to the general population. This analysis helped to change UK policy, so that from February 2021 all people on the learning disability register were prioritised for vaccination.

Dr Tom Shakespeare will report on UK Research and Innovation-funded qualitative research about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disabled people in England and Scotland, exploring how both the virus itself, and public health measures to control the virus, negatively impacted social inclusion.

Speakers

Dr Elizabeth Williamson, LSHTM and Professor Tom Shakespeare, LSHTM
