Disability - Better understood as a public health issue or a human rights issue?

In this talk, Tom will review human rights and public health approaches to disability, explore the benefits and weaknesses of each approach, and highlight where some potential clashes might need sensitive resolution.  He will discuss sexual and reproductive rights, violence against disabled people and other human rights issues.

Tom Shakespeare is professor of disability research at the International Centre for Evidence in Disability at LSHTM.  He was previously with Norwich Medical School, and before that at WHO, Geneva.  His books include The Sexual Politics of Disability (1996) and Disability Rights and Wrongs (2006).  His most recent research project was with disabled people who have had success In Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.  He is currently supporting the UN Special Rapporteur on Disability with an evidence review on disability and bioethics.
