The epidemiology and control of HIV infection: a spotlight on adolescents and young people

Outlining the magnitude and diversity of the global epidemic of HIV.

Chido Dziva Chikwara and Helen Weiss will briefly outline the magnitude and diversity of the global epidemic of HIV, and focus specifically on HIV-related issues in adolescents and young people, a group that is disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic and has worse HIV treatment outcomes than other age groups.  The session will draw out unique challenges faced in serving this age-group and will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience.

Helen Weiss

Helen Weiss is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the MRC International Statistics and Epidemiology Partnership, MRC International Statistics and Epidemiology Group.  Helen has extensive expertise in the design and analysis of observational and intervention studies on HIV and mental health in sub-Saharan Africa and India.  Her current work focuses on adolescent health, including evaluating strategies improving access to treatment and care for adolescents living with HIV, as well as studies on comorbidities of HIV and mental health. Chido Dziva Chikwari 

Chido Dziva Chikwari is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and a co-Programme Director for the online MSc in Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy and Programming. She has experience developing, coordinating and evaluating implementation research studies with particular focus on projects evaluating the provision of sexual and reproductive health services for youth and  HIV testing interventions. She is based in Zimbabwe at The Health Research Unit Zimbabwe (THRU-ZIM).
