Fitness flux in COVID-19 and seasonal influenza H3N2

Understanding and measuring how COVID-19 and influenza virus population change leads to new variants spreading.

This seminar will explain how new variants of COVID-19 and flu appear as the viruses evolve to avoid human immunity. The talk will characterise this process of change, its rate and its relation to the rise of beneficial mutations within viral populations.

Professor Trevor Bedford

Professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division and the Computational Biology Program, affiliate faculty in the Department of Genome Sciences and the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington, and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
