A Framework for Dissecting and Applying Bacterial Antibiotic Responses
Summary
Bacteria form resistance to our antibiotics at an alarming rate, given the timescale at which new treatments are being developed. Thus, there is a critical need to use antibiotics more effectively, extend the shelf life of existing antibiotics and minimize their side effects. Using drug resistant clinical isolates and computational modeling, I have developed a framework to dissect the bacterial antibiotic response and guide treatment formulation.
Hannah Meredith received her Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Charlottesville in May, 2012. She joined Dr. Lingchong You’s lab in Duke’s Biomedical Engineering Department in August, 2012 as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. There, she completed her PhD on optimizing the use of β-lactam antibiotics to treat β-lactamase producing bacteria. While at Duke, Hannah also received a Doctoral Certificate in Global Health. She traveled to Sri Lanka to study the transmission points of multi-drug resistant Enterobacteriaceae in the population. Hannah is excited to be joining Dr. Laith Yakob at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as a Whitaker Scholar to research mosquito control methods that reduce both the transmission of malaria and the risk of selecting for drug-resistant mosquitoes.
