Genomic surveillance in Haiti: cholera, arboviruses, and coronaviruses
In this seminar, Dr Mavian will dive into over 13 years of genomic surveillance and molecular epidemiology of infectious disease conducted in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
Dr Mavian will talk about the introduction and transmission of cholera, and its re-emergence after apparent elimination. She will also present the emergence of a recombinant Mayaro virus strain in the island, and two independent coronavirus spillover events.

Dr Carla Mavian, Emerging Pathogens Institute, University of Florida
Dr Mavian is an Assistant Professor in the Emerging Pathogens Institute at University of Florida. Her lab is interested in the ecology of emerging, and re-emerging pathogens, including pathogens that are adapted to humans and those with a zoonotic potential, in ecosystems threatened by climate change that is already amplifying diseases and transmission hotspots. Her research includes Vibrio cholerae, mosquito- and bat-borne viruses.
