Global Mental Health: The “Fourth Shift” and Involvement in Research, by Grace Ryan

The 2018 Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health and Sustainable Development claims the field of global mental health is undergoing a ‘transformational shift’ toward an ethic of ‘nothing about us without us’. Yet there are relatively few published examples of the involvement of people with lived experience from the Global South in the research literature. This talk will discuss recent developments and early learning from efforts to improve involvement in global mental health research, including the co-production approach of the SUCCEED Africa Health Research Programme Consortium in Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. 

The Friendship Bench In A Box: A scale strategy, by Dixon Chibanda

The Friendship Bench programme has been running for over 10 years in Zimbabwe where it has now been successfully scaled up to all 10 provinces covering a total population of approximately 16 million. In 2023 over 300 000 people accessed Friendship Bench in Zimbabwe. In the last three years, the focus has been on how best to share the lessons learnt over the last decade on how best to replicate the model, particularly outside Zimbabwe. This talk will outline early lessons of introducing the model in Zimbabwe, challenges in replications across Zimbabwe and beyond. The creation of the Friendship Bench In A Box as a strategy for scale-using the Washington DC replication with HepAge USA as an example.
