Mycoplasma genitalium - the 'silent' emerging super-bug
Mycoplamsa genitalium is a sexually transmitted pathogen that is associated with cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and urethritis. Of concern, there are reports of a rapid rise in antimicrobial resistance to macrolides (used as first-line therapy) and quinolones (second-line therapy). There is lack of consensus regarding its clinical presentation (particularly its association with proctitis) and how we should screen for this pathogen.
Jason Ong is a sexual health physician and researcher from Monash University in Australia, and is an honorary Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He will discuss his research on: MG detection in men who have sex with men in Australia; MG detection in women living with HIV in South Africa; MG prevalence in sexual contacts in Australia, and the cost-effectiveness of screening for MG.
